Knowing where you are within a Portal is a key usability feature. Within SharePoint, there is a breadcrumb out of the box and its very simple to add. I’ll step you through adding the control and will identify the key pages that must be edited as well.

The Code
The ability to display a breadcrumb trail on pages is a common requirement. SharePoint Portal Server includes a standard control to do just that. The code is as follows:

<SPSWC:BreadCrumbTrail runat="server" id="NewBreadCrumbTrail" LeadInText="" VerticalMode="false" FrameType="None" />

Placement
The code should be placed at the top of the page just after the Form tag. The typical approach I use is to enclose the control with a table.
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
<tr>
<td>WC:BreadCrumbTrail runat="server" id="NewBreadCrumbTrail" LeadInText="" VerticalMode="false" FrameType="None" /></td>
<tr>
</table>

Simple!
