Well it’s no surprise that Google is taking on Microsoft like so many others have tried but will they be successful? Is the industry ready for a cheaper alternative? Maybe Google’s play is SMB?

Looking at the Google offerings, they have online versions of Office tools, Search, Email and now Collaboration and Publishing sites. These are very compelling services for small companies considering what it costs to own a data center with the aforementioned services/technologies.

But how will Google make money? What’s Microsoft’s next move? Is there another player about to surface on the market and really shake things up? I guess time will tell what the overall impact will be since after being in this industry for 20 years, I’ve witnessed several such initiatives that were successful (Windows, Office and Exchange) and those that died miserably (OS/2, Word Perfect).
