Just back from my week long trip out west to Whistler to present at the companies Information Management summit and to stop in Calgary on the way back home to meet up with clients and the local team – HP event information.

My topic of presentation was Information Management and an approach to reducing operational costs, risks associated with litigation (audits) and deriving business value. Not a fan of slide-ware I had some of my facilitation tools shipped to the hotel (Four Seasons) to focus the conversations.


Presenting to CIOs, I kicked off with a discussion about key pain points organizations are faced with, how they have far reaching impacts and an approach to addressing them (not using Band-Aids) – since Band-Aids are a major cause of the problem. Also discussing solutions to the problem using governance to affect cultural influence, mandate behaviors that are required for success, education programs, technology (mix of hardware, software, integration and operations) roadmaps and policy changes initiated by executives and enforced and measured using HR process and tools.

When discussing this subject, I prefer to use examples such as the following:

  • How do we leverage our information assets? We have so much data its either trapped in a system or hard to find. Problems such as info-glut, dispirit systems are impeding an organizations ability to execute and affecting cost structures and customer service.
  • How do we deal with legal risks and associated costs? More of an issues for US companies but I know of one company that budget is $30m USD for external legal counsel fees. I also know of a company that has spent significant money restoring tapes (to lazy to destroy them) at the auditors request (cost just under a $1m to do)
  • IT related pain such as silo’d projects (EDRM, Archive, File share retirement, SharePoint etc…) and the ever growing storage problem. IT is stuck in the mode of managing capacity and is powerless from an information management perspective to act – hence my discussion regarding Governance.

What I realized is that each organization is facing the same problem, the information explosion! They are also facing the realities of their industry – we are in a depression or coming out of one? Organizations are not structured to deal with information management. They are mostly silo’d and using band-aids to get by. Some forward looking thinkers see the wall approaching and are trying to do something about it.
